                         GENERAL INFORMATION
                         -------------------

LOGGER is a WINDOWS program to track or 'log' time spent on your
different projects. When you start a project, you should start
LOGGER as well: it will sit ('minimized') tracking the time you
spend on the project. The information is stored in a standard text
(ASCII) file name with the name of the project. A typical (very
small) log file might look like this:

PROJECT NAME: STUDYING
STARTING DATE: 01-30-1993 14:54:15
---------------------------------------
IN: 01-30-1993 14:55:00
OUT: 01-30-1993 15:55:00
SESSION TOTAL: 001.00 hours.
RUNNING TOTAL: 001.00 hours.
IN: 02-14-1993 09:46:19
OUT: 02-14-1993 11:46:19
SESSION TOTAL: 002.00 hours.
RUNNING TOTAL: 003.00 hours.
GRAND TOTAL IN SECONDS = 10800.00 seconds.

When you stop working on a project, just close LOGGER (or exit
WINDOWS). It will update the time-log on that project in a file
named with the name of the project.

It is intended for use by people interested in tracking the time
they spend on different projects, either for their own interest or
for professional billing purposes. All project log-files are
readable by any text editor.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

                            HOW TO USE
                            ----------

1. Create a New Project Log File by clicking on the "Create New Log
File" button. Enter an eight character name for the project. A new
log file will be created.

2. Any time you set to work on a particular project, simply select
that project's name (which is also the log file name) and click on
the "START LOG" button. LOGGER will 'minimize' itself into a clock,
use virtually no system resources, and wait till you 'log out'.

3. When you stop working on the project, close LOGGER and the log
of your time working on the project will be updated in its log file.

IT IS AS SIMPLE AS THAT !

------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        EDITING THE LOG FILE
                        --------------------

Since the log files are in standard text format, they can be edited.
You can insert notes about the progress of your project or about things
to remember to do next time you log into the project. In other words,
LOGGER can serve as a project journal. LOGGER provides a convenient
interface to the standard Windows (tm) editor "Notepad" to make this
feature available whenever logging in or logging out of a project.

There is one caveat about editing the log file: the last line in the
log file which begins "GRAND TOTAL IN SECONDS = " is essential in correctly
updating the log file. DO NOT EDIT THIS LINE! All editorial changes
should be made above this line.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

                          THE CLOCK OPTIONS
                          -----------------

LOGGER can also function as a small clock program. When minimimized it
reports the current time at fifteen seconds intervals. If there is an
alarm set, it reports on that as well.

LOGGER also provides two special clock options: 1) an alarm clock; and
2) a chimer. These are accessible from the menu or by pressing CTRL-A
(for the alarm) or CTRL-C (for the chimer).

The alarm is a standard alarm clock such as found on most little clock
programs. This feature is available whether or not a project is being
logged, and whether or not LOGGER is minimized. Thus LOGGER can function
as a stand-alone alarm clock program.

The chimer is a timer that informs you how long you have been logged into
a project. You can set it for any interval from 1 minute to 1440 minutes
(24 hours). If, for example, you set the interval to 60 minutes, the
timer starts when you log into a project and every hour you will receive
a message box informing you of how many hours you have been logged into
that project. The chimer interval must be set before you log into a
project.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

                         THE DEFAULT SETTINGS
                         --------------------

Default settings for the alarm time, alarm message, chimer interval,
and log filename are the settings for these variables when logger was
last exited.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

                   COMPATIBILITY WITH SCREEN SAVERS
                   --------------------------------

Because some screen savers respond to ANY screen update, the reporting
of time that LOGGER does when minimized will 'fool' these screen savers
into thinking there is someone at work. Often this is only a problem if
the minimized icon is visible, which usually is not the case when one is
working with a word processor or spreadsheet or any application that uses
a large window. So to keep a screen saver of this kind functional while
LOGGER is minimized, you simply have to be sure the LOGGER icon is behind
a window. If this strategy doesn't work, then turning off the "Updating
Icon" with its check box will allow all screensavers to work.
