OVERVIEW
========

The MIDI KEY VIEWER is a windows 3.1 program that monitors that MIDI
output from all applications in the system and displays the MIDI notes
in real time on a graphical piano keyboard. You can immediately see
everything that is going on in a variety of ways.

program for any purpose or reason. It comes without any warrenty of any
kind, express or implied.

If you find this program useful, all I ask is to please send a postcard
from your city to Jeff at:

INSTALLATION
============

To install this software, just unzip the zip file into a directory (you
probably already did that since you are reading this), and copy the
'WNKEYVW.INI' file to your windows directory (usually 'C:\WINDOWS') like
this from the DOS prompt:

	copy wnkeyvw.ini c:\windows

Or use file manager to copy the file.

Then you should add the program's icon to the program manager by
selecting the 'NEW' menu item in the program manager's 'FILE' menu. Use
'Browse...' to find the program 'KEYS.EXE' where it was unzipped.

You may also simply run the 'KEYS.EXE' program from the file manager or
the 'Run' menu item.

OPTIONS
=======

There are quite a number of options for displaying the MIDI notes:

	ZOOM level (50%,100%,150%,200%,300%)

Sets the the size of the graphical keyboard.

	Single OMNI Keyboard/Multiple Keyboards

With 'Single OMNI Keyboard' selected, all MIDI channels are displayed on
one graphical keyboard. With Multiple Keyboards selected, each
displayed MIDI channel is on its own graphical keyboard.

	Always on top

When selected, the window will always be in front of any other normal
windows in the system. This is useful if you want to interact with a
full screen window but still want to watch the key viewer window.

	No Title

When selected, the title bar, menu, and scroll bars of the window
disapear, leaving more room for graphics. To bring back the menu you
can double-click on the window. This will toggle the menu display, but
will not change the 'No Title' setting so you can save the settings for
later retrieval.

	Colors

When selected, notes from different MIDI channels will be displayed in
different colors. This is useful in Single OMNI Keyboard mode.

	Channels

With this pop up menu you can enable and disable the display of specific
MIDI channels. This is useful so you can display only the relevant MIDI
channels in Multiple Keyboards mode, and is also useful in Single OMNI
Keyboard mode to filter out the drum channel.

	All Notes Off

When you select this menu item any notes that are currently displayed as 'on'
will be shut off. This is useful if a misbehaved MIDI application
leaves some notes on when it shouldn't.

LOADING/SAVING OPTIONS
======================

Once you come up with settings that you like, you may save the settings
into one of 4 option 'slots', A,B,C, or D with the file menu. Option
slot 'A' is always loaded on start up. At any time you may load options
from any slot.

The options are stored in the 'WNKEYVW.INI' file, which should be in
your windows directory.

HISTORY
=======

I originally wrote this program in 1992 for myself in plain DOS so I
could view the MIDI output that came from my other computer that I use
for MIDI sequencing. I ended up using it all the time, because it was
useful and fun to watch, So I re-wrote it from scratch for MS-Windows 3.1.

This application is quite efficient, and is usable even on a 16 Mhz 386-SX.

Now you can enjoy it without having to have two computers running MIDI
at the same time!

Remember to send that postcard!!!!

Good Luck!
