Troubleshooting - Common Questions
=================================================

This document covers some of the common problems
encountered when using the CD Player. If you are
experiencing difficulties read this document
before doing anything else. If the answer is not
here then check the online help supplied with the
CD Player. If you still cannot get it working, mail
cdplayer@coupland.demon.co.uk with full details of
the problem, and a copy of your CONFIG.SYS and
AUTOEXEC.BAT files.

1. I get a warning when I start CD Player
2. The initial display is blank with an error displayed

3. There's a CD in the drive but it won't play

4. Unusual or corrupt numeric time displays

5. GPF during install under NetTools

=======================================================

1. I get a warning when I start CD Player
2. The initial display is blank with an error displayed

A. The most common cause for both these problems is not
having a CD in the drive when the player is started.
Insert a CD to clear the message. The warning is a
caution and can be disabled in the Configuration screen.
If the problem persists with a CD inserted check #3
below.

3. There's a CD in the drive but it won't play

A. Open Control Panel, then Drivers and check that
"[MCI] CD Audio" is in the list. If it is in the list,
select it, then click on Setup and make sure the message
reports that at least 1 CDRom was found.
   If no CDRom was found, make sure the necessary DOS
drivers are loaded in the CONFIG.SYS file, and then
check that MSCDEX is loaded before starting Windows, this
is usually loaded in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

4. Unusual or corrupt numeric time displays

There are two common causes of this, the first is the way
CD Player is communicating with the CDRom device. In the
Settings | Configure menu, change the "CDRom Communication"
check box, the default is on, some older devices require
this to be off.
The second cause is out of date MCI drivers. You should
obtain the latest versions from Microsoft. The files and
sizes which are confirmed to work with CD Player are;

 File              Size   Location
 MSCDEX  .EXE     25361   \DOS
 MCICDA  .DRV     13824   [windows]\SYSTEM
 MMSYSTEM.DLL     61648   [windows]\SYSTEM

File dates and versions are not shown as MicroSoft updated
the file versions with Windows 3.11 but they did not change
functionally.

5. GPF during install under NetTools

A problem has been encountered during the final stages of testing
of a General Protection Fault being caused during the install.
The cure for this is to not run NETTools program manager during
the installation.
