AppearanceHopper fills customization holes in the standard Mac OS 8.5, by
giving you access to features that are not editable from the Appearance
control panel. AppearanceHopper allows you to: set the font, size, and
style of the System Fonts; access the "hidden" scroll bar options; set the
style of alias names, and turn off the arrow badge on aliases; and modify
the Application Switcher palette, all in one user-friendly control panel.

AppearanceHopper is $9 shareware available in English and French; after
ten trials, you must register the software in order to continue using it.
Mac OS 8.5 and AppleScript are required.

This patch cannot work properly while virus detection software is
running. Please make sure that you have disabled any virus detectors
before applying the patch (or allow the process to continue at any virus
alerts).

To use the patch, simply launch it by double-clicking on its icon in the
=46inder, or select the icon and then open by typing cmd-o on the keyboard
or selecting Open from the File menu. Read the information in the window
and then select the Patch button. You will be presented with a dialog box
asking for your copy of Stuffit Expander. Navigate through your disk's
hierarchy to select the appropriate file, and hit either return, enter or
use the mouse to click on the Patch button. Even though the patch is
designed to leave your original copy unmodified and to create a duplicate
copy that is modified, I recommend that you create your own duplicate
first and work on that copy. If something goes wrong, you will then still
have your original file untouched. This is easier and faster and safer
than reinstalling Stuffit Expander from scratch.

This patch was developed on an Apple Power Macintosh computer for Stuffit
Expander v.5.1 and may not work with any other combination. I appreciate
any and all feedback.

Subject: [*] Gammasoft Office

Here is the latest version of Gammasoft Office, the office program made by
Gammasoft Incorporated, the not-really-a-software-company owned by
12-year-olds!

Read Me

Welcome to Gammasoft Office. Gammasoft Office is the simpler way to office.
It's the beginning of a four-dimensional, Microsoft Office-compatable,
simple multi-function program. Of course, since it's in its development
stages, there is no color, MSOffice compatability, or four-dimensionality
involved.

Gammasoft Office contains seven different programs, each with it's own
functions:

* Gamma Central: simple to-do list and write-only text-only word processor
* GSWrite: simple word-processor with only global style settings
* GS Spreads: simple spreadsheet with 7 columns and 22 rows
* Pre Sents: basic presentation program
* GSBase: little database with only 12 fields per record
* Pict-Sure: tiny little black-and-white MacPaint-based painting program
* R++: our own little version of BASIC.

There is a launch pad and an online help system included.

To install this version of Gammasoft Office, double-click the Install
program. If you just want to test it and you aren't sure if you want it
taking up hard disk space, double-click on the Run From Disk icon.

You will need HyperCard 2.1 for this. If you don't have it, just copy the
"hc" and "Home" files from the HyperCard folder to your hard disk.
HyperCard only takes up about 754K of hard disk space.

Gammasoft Office will only need 429K of hard disk space. With both
Gammasoft Office and HyperCard installed, it will only take up 1183K, which
is just over a megabyte.

After installation, to open Gammasoft Office, just double-click on the
Gammasoft Office icon and, when the program is done loading, click the name
of the program you want to use. NEVER open a Gammasoft Office program by
double-clicking the program's own, private icon. The same goes for
documents. The program must be launched from the launch pad, and the
documents must be opened from the program they were created in. The private
icons you see for the individual programs and documents are just uncompiled
code run by the Gammasoft Office program.

For more information, see the online help file.

Subject: [*] Ira's Desktop Pictures - Sampler - Vol 1

This sample pack contains 3 images from each of my shareware desktop picture
collections. The images are at 640x480 resolution. This will allow you to
get a feeling for each group of images and to consider registering the full
collections which each contain 20 images.

About Aerial:
Desktop Pictures: Aerial was inspired by the stirring satellite and high
orbit photos that have become as common as the daily TV weather report. I
wasn't trying to illustrate the subject but to express a feeling: the
luminosity of our glowing planet enveloping jagged islands and great
mountain ranges.

About Aurora:
These images were inspired by the magnificent Hubble Space photographs.
Aurora is meant to express a sense of awe.

About Lightning:
300,000 volts per foot (1 million volts per meter) shooting through a
half-inch channel of air. The word "awesome" must have been coined watching
a lightning storm.  These images are variations on the theme of lightning;
sort of the way a musician will explore a melody, seeing where it will go,
where it will take him/her.

About The Planets:
"The Planets" was inspired by the Mars mission.
Watching the spunky Sojourner rover disembark from the Pathfinder lander and
then successfully explore a rock strewn valley of Mars was just thrilling!
The Planets is meant to express something of that: the Music of the Spheres.

---
System Requirements:
* System 8x Desktop Picture/Appearance control panel or pre-system 8 with
the shareware application Decor
* Millions of colors preferred; thousands of colors will look good

Aerial and Lightning are available in the following monitor resolutions:
1024x768; 1152x870; 640x480; 800x600; 832x624
The Planets and Aurora are available in 832x624 resolution only.

Subject: [*] Switch-It 1.9.6

Switch-It 1.9.6 - Switch Applications via the Keyboard - Freeware

This control panel allows you to cycle through running applications by
Command-Tab. Releasing the Command key actually switches to the
application. Pressing the Escape key cancels the current switching
request while the Command key is still down.

You can easily customize the hot keys and many display options (font,
colors, view mode), as well as the application ordering (front to back,
alphabetical, launch order).

While cycling through the running applications, you can also use shortcut
keys to:
- Access directly to the Finder ('F').
- Request the termination of applications, by selecting them either
individually (quit: 'Q' or 'X'), or globally (kill-all: 'K').
- Open the information window of the selected application ('I').
- Reveal the selected application in the Finder ('R').
- Automatically open the control panel, and customize all the available
options ('O').

Requires Mac OS System 7.0 or later (System 7.5 or newer is recommended).

Subject: [*] TextE@se

Here is the latest version of TextE@se, the At Ease-like HyperCard stack
made by Gammasoft Incorporated, the not-really-a-software-company owned by
12-year-olds!

Instructions for TextE@se

TextE@se is a HyperCard stack. It functions similar to At Ease, but it
doesn't harm anything with boot blocks or extensions or "make sure it is
turned off before deleting it" lines.

To "turn it on," simply drag an alias of it into the startup items folder.
To "turn it off," simply drag the alias out of the startup items folder. If
you delete it without "turning it off," it won't harm anything like At Ease
would do. It would simply say "The alias could not be opened because the
original item could not be found." No bombs, sad Macs, blinking question
marks, boot block modification, or anything out of the ordinary.

Requirements:
* HyperCard 2.0 or later (or Player)
* AppleScript is needed for working with some files and using the Eject
Disk, Restart, and Shut Down functions.

Setup:
* After de-BinHexing and unstuffing the file, open up the TextE@se folder.
* Open up the SupportFiles folder, and move the FILEBROWSER font into the
Fonts folder.
* Close the SupportFiles folder.
* Open up the Matrixes folder, then one of the folders within the Matrixes
folder. The folder you open depends on if you want the Minimal, Normal, or
Extended file type lists.
* Drag the "TextE@se Filetype Matrix" file to the folder where HyperCard
(or HyperCard Player) is listed. If you have a new computer, HyperCard
Player should be in Apple Extras.
* Close the Matrixes folders.
* Double-click TextE@se. You're ready to go!

About the Filetype Matrix
The file titled "TextE@se Filetype Matrix" contains file type
definitions. The very first character in the file is called the "Unknown
Document Icon Character." It is the character in the FILEBROWSER font that
corresponds to the icon of a general document file. Everything except that
first character that is still on the first line is ignored.
Starting with line 2, we have the file type definitions. There are
four items on each line, which are seperated by commas. The first item is
the title. This is plain English, like Application and Desk Accessory and
Kaleidoscope Scheme. The second item is the file type. File types are four
characters that are used to identify files. Examples are APPL, dfil, and
Colr.

Subject: [*] The Open With Package 2.0.1

Open With Package lets you open documents with applications other than their
creator. You no longer have to drag those documents through multiple
folders. You
don't have to launch the application and then navigate through the open dial=
og.
Just control-click on a document and choose from the applications on your di=
sks
that can open it in the pop up list. You can save yourself whole seconds of
searching each time you want to open an Adobe PhotoShop=81 file in
GraphicConverter
for example (hey, this adds up). Only applications that can open all the
documents in the selection appear in the popup menu, so it doesn't take long=
 to
find the application that you want.

The Open With Package is Shareware $10.
Version 2.0.1 fixes an installer bug, which stopped installation on
international systems. Users who have version 2.0 working need not upgrade.

This software may be distributed on commercial CDs.

Subject: [*] TriVectus Kicho: Keyboard caps-lock utility

Kicho is a small background-only application that modifies the behavior of
the caps-lock key such that when caps-lock is on, typing with the shift key
produces lower-case letters, similar to the behavior of the caps-lock key
on PCs and Apple IIs. Kicho makes no other modifications to the keyboard's
behavior.

Because Kicho is an application and not an extension or control panel, it
can be activated and deactivated on-the-fly, without restarting, and is
unlikely to cause system conflicts. However, being a background
application, it's still invisible to the user.

Kicho requires Mac OS 8 and a PowerPC processor. It is sold as
shareware at a price of $10 for a single-user license. Site and worldwide
licenses are available.

Subject: (Q) National Geographic Maps CD-ROM sound quality is lousy

Dear Digest readers,
I have tried on VirtualPC G3 2.1.3 with Windows 98, Softwindows 95, and
OrangePC 620 3.1 with Windows 95. All yield the same results. When I
play any audio files from the history of map making, I get voice masked by
very loud static. So loud in fact I have to turn it down or else hurt my
ears. Yet John Madden's Football 98 works fine on the same version of
VirtualPC. Softwindows 95 and VirtualPC I have tried on a Powerbook G3
series 233 Mhz, and OrangePC 620 I tried on my 7200. Any idea what could
be causing the lousy sound quality? The videos seem to work well in terms
of the visual work, but it is nice to have an audio explanation of what is
being seen. Please forward this to any PC newsgroup you think might be
appropriate. I don't have much time to read those newsgroups,

BTW VirtualPC G3 is the fastest emulator I have ever seen. It doesn't
keep you waiting at all.

Thank you.
Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net
