You will also need a copy of the word import xtension for quark. the
latest versions are free download from quark's website. OLE should be
installed during the ms word installation, so check in your
extextions folder before installing it from the xpress cd.

Subject: (Q) 8.6 and Localtalk Bridge

I have a blue&white G3 450 MHz running OS 8.6, including Open
Transport 2.0.3. While not supported, should Localtalk Bridge still
work in this configuration? I find that the load process freezes at
the point Localtalk Bridge is being installed. This occurs both for
the version downloaded straight from Apple and for a version modified
with the GeeThree.com Bridge Patcher. Does anyone have experience in
using Localtalk Bridge in the same hardware/software configuration I
have? Thanks!

I suspect you are creating version 3 pdf files, and some of your users are
using Acrobat 2.x (app or plug-in). In the Distiller menu, select Job
Options... and then click on the 'Compatibility' popup menu to select
'Acrobat 2.1' instead of Acrobat 3.

Cheers,

I think I know what the problem is. You use Acrobat Distiller and Reader
3.01, those which can't see anything use 3.0 or earlier (I don't
remember at what stage the problem came up - 2 -> 3, or 3 -> 3.01).

Try it with an earlier distiller/reader version, or convince your users
to upgrade.

Good luck, Christian.

Subject: Decoding mime's

Bob,

I recommend Mpack (available on InfoMac, maybe also in the AOL Mac
software forums), or the StuffIt Expander/DropStuff combination (or
StuffIt Lite or Deluxe), any version after 3.5. The newest being passed
out in apps is 5.0 or 5.1, and IMHO it has the cleanest MIME decoders
Aladdin has released. MPack is as good, but it's older and somewhat hard
to track down. I'd try the InfoMac web mirror
(http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive.html) or VersionTracker's
search engine (www.versiontracker.com) for either or both of them.

Hope this helps.

PS & Aside: I'm still waiting for AOL to "get with the program" and
recommend these apps in their literature. Maybe they do: I haven't
subscribed since Winter '97 myself.

FCR Software <http://www.fcr.com/> has what you are looking for.
LinkUPPP is available for up to 2 modems or 4 ISDN lines. I used it,
until fairly recently (the single modem version), and was very
pleased with its performance!

Subject: Enlarging display on old 12 inch monitor?

I have an old 12 inch Mac RGB monitor (originally purchased with an LC). It
still works just fine and I would like to keep using it. I remember from
several years ago that there was some sort of tweak which would allow one to
enlarge the useable screen area and eliminate the almost 3/4 inch border of
black screen. I've searched the info-mac archives with no result so far. Does
anyone out there know how to do this, or point me towards the correct info?

Subject: Postscript or not!

I am buying Laser printer. Currently own an old HP DeskWriter (B&W). I
would like to go to cheap and am looking at the low end HP laser printer
($399-$499). It is not Postscript. I am not a graphics oriented person.
i may print a few web pages with photos. I may print some drawings (which
are not postscript). My wife may print some certificates, or some B&W
graphics for school.

Do I need post script or will quickdraw printer be sufficient?

Thanks

Jeff

Subject: Quicken 98 Problem

I recently installed Quicken deluxe 98 on my G3 running OS 8.6. It
was a freebee offered by Intuit in order to make my old Quicken-5 Y2K
compliant. Bless 'em for that!

I restarted as recommended then ran the Quicken Deluxe 98 PPC patch.

I then launched Quicken 98 for the first time and got the alert
box: "Quicken was unable to find OneClick Runtime in the Quicken Essentials
folder. Without OneClick Runtime (or the commercially available OneClick
control panel), Quicken will not be able to display its button bars."

When I checked the Quicken Essentials folder, however, it did
indeed contain OneClick Runtime.

I then went to both Intuit's and OneCllick's sites to see if I
could find a fix and nothing either recommended worked. E.g.

One "fix" recommended: Simply quit and relaunch Quicken and the buttons
should be available. Launching Quicken twice is apparently necessary for
Quicken to copy their button palette file into the OneClick folder.

The other "fix" recommended:

1. In Quicken, choose the Preferences option in the Edit menu.
2. Click on General in the list of preference categories shown at the left
of the Preferences window.
3. Uncheck the Show Button Bars option, then click OK.
4. Now again, select the Preferences option in the Edit menu.
5. Check the Show Button Bars option, then click OK.

	Anyone solve this problem yet???

	Many Thanks,
	Bob G.

Subject: Word attachments not readable

Hello Info-mac --

All right, I'm at my wit's end. Two new G3 PowerBooks, both running
Office98. One creates a Word document, and attaches it to an e-mail (I
hate it, but that's the way they work), using Netscape Communicator 4.5.
Sends it to the other, who downloads the attachment.

MS Word 98 refuses to open the document. I open it in TexEdit Plus, strip
off the header gibberish, and save it as plain text. Now it can be opened.

Anyone else seen this behavior? And if so, do you have a solution?

Thanks.
