Subject: Quadra630 Crashes and Won't Restart

We have a quadra630 with 8Mbyte Ram running System 7.5.5.
It crashes randomly.
After crashing it often cannot be restarted unless:
a) Plug removed from wall and replugged,
b) Sometimes the Motherboard needs to be pulled and reseated.
Does anyone have ANY ideas about what might be going on? Any suggestions
are welcome. -Thanks

Edward, try the The InformInit 1.3. You can locate the latest version at
The Mac Pruning Pages & InformInit home page
(http://www.ambrosiasw.com/DEF/ ). It has exactly the information you
seek. I think it is also available on Info-Mac.
Good Luck.

Hi there,
As many of you have noticed (and written!) we've been tweeking the digest
format. It is getting to the point that most people have minor complains,
but nothing really big. At the moment I've been sending the digest out
about once a day or so. Either tomorrow (Weds) or Thursday I'll start
sending out enough digests to clear the queue each day. Thanks for your
patience getting the digest back online!

	Cheers,
		Gordon.

The solution for you is to use the "LaserWriter 300" Chooser extension. I
believe it should have installed with one of the updates, or you can get it at
the Apple site.

On 68000 macs (Plus, SE, Portable, Classic and PowerBook 100) only NCSA
Mosaic 1.0.3, MacWeb 1.00A3.2 and v2.0 work. They are old and do not
understand newer html tags.

Make sure that the proper port is selected in the Chooser, and that the
printer is actually plugged into that port.

If that's correct, check if the printer works with another computer.

I'm the owner of MacTools (pre MacTools Pro) and was wondering if Norton
Utilities was now the only game in town for diagnostics and repair. I know
that Symantec 'absorbed' MacTools but I don't know of any competition that
has arisen to give users a choice for their money. Can anyone out there
guide me? I feel that I'm falling behind the times but I'm just not sure
that Norton Utilities is the future. Perhaps it is and I'm uncecessarily
concerned.

One other point. With my MacTools, I am unable to make an Emergency Disk
because I get the message that there is not enough space on a 1.4mb floppy.
I run 7.5.3 on an LC520 with 20 mb Ram.

Thanks for your time,

Derek

I have an old program called EPlanner from SoftStream Intl. It does Gantt
charts with calendars, milestones, actual/projected, timelines, etc.
Exports data to Excel, FileMaker, etc. It defaults to a small window on
opening, but the window can be dragged larger. And is only B&W. Otherwise,
it seems to work fine. It was copyright 1987-1990 but I tested it on a
IIvx (System 7.1) and a 578 (System 7.5).

If interested, I'll sell it for $10 including shipping (air) from Hawaii.

I am looking for an interface card between a Mac SE/30 and a Radius 2 page

monitor at a great price. The only problem is they cannot find the
interface card that had been used with it.

If you have, or know of, an inexpensive interface card, I would appreciate
hearing from you. I believe the Radius part number is BHC234000075. The
card in one system I have seen also says "ASSY 632-0068C" I cannot afford
the Radius price for a new card ($300).

I have tried all the used hardware sources I know of, including Sun
Remarketing, Pre-Owned Electronics, PreFix Technologies, NEXCOMP, and
Shreve Systems.

When I bought my Powerbook 540c 2nd hand, I got it together with the whole
Microsoft Office package (including disks, manuals - not a "forgot to erase"
copy). I personally use Claris Works 4.0 for those things I do privately;
in the office we have a "mixed" environment, and I use Word 6.01 to facilita=

Word 6.01, as do the PCs (one is a Win95, it uses the Word95 version). I wor=

some variant of MS-Word. Therefore the choice. I also own Claris MacWrite Pr=

Besides the memory problem, I haven't seen much difference between Word on
the PPC chip and Word on the 68040. But this is on my wife's computer.
Hopefully she will notice some benefit.

I have heard only good things about Nisus, especially in regard to how well
it handles different character sets. I don't know if Romontsch has any
special characters, but it might be worth trying for you. Nisus has a free
60 day demo of the latest version of Nisus Writer at

I think I might give it a try myself.

Subject: system 7.6, a 5300cs and PCethernet card problems

Hello,

I have an Eigerlab's PCMCIA card that I bought from MacMall for my
5300cs/24/750. Macmall substituted these cards as their 'house brand' for
Asante cards when we ordered last summer. First of all if you have one of
these cards, I am sorry for you. They have been nothing but trouble for
months. Even Macmall has dropped selling them. Eigerlabs was too
embarassed to put their name on them. The technical support people have no
macintosh experience and their driver software is flawed at best.

Okay so I am turning to you for help. The driver disk that came with this
card only installs crrectly when using classic appletalk. So what I had to
do in the past is run classic appletalk with system 7.5.5 and then swich
back to open transport and then it would work. If I upgrade to system 7.6
and then 7.6.1 things work for a while but sooner or later I get a crash
when ethernet loads. What I would like to do is install system 7.6 and
then upgrade to system 7.6.1 directly. Since classic appletalk is not
supported though I can not install my ethernet card software. Doesn't
apple have any ethernet support for pcmcia cards? After instalation the
only choices I have with appletalk is IRTALK and modem/printer port? I
should have a choice of alternate ethernet. The Eigerlabs software has 4
files: ehtertalk phase 2, network, pccard ethernet driver, pc card ethernet
extension. Just instaling the last 2 in the extensions folder is enough to
get the card recognized by my mac (no window on start up that says the
correct pccard software is not installed), but still there is no alternate
ethernet option in apple talk.

If anone has more info or a solution I would appreciate hearing from you.
PCMCIA's should all be the same right? If anyone has a driver for a PCMCIA
card that works with system 7.6.1 I would appreciate giving it a try.

Thank you, David
