What happened? In an effort to sort out a recent problem I have been
having with ARA launching itself - unbidden - and connecting to my ISP, I
trashed the TCP/IP preferences file.

When I next launched TCP/IP CP, I noticed it was distinctly different
than the last time I looked at it. To wit everything on the right-hand
side is missing:

*"Select Host Files" button is missing
*"Implicit Search Path; Starting domain name" is missing
      *"Ending domain name" is missing
      *"Additional Search Domains" is missing
      * And the "Info" and "Options..." buttons are missing.

Anyone know how I get them back, please?

BTW, I backup my preference files, so if I trashed the new TCP/IP
preference file and replaced it with the backup version, would my missing
items be returned?

      Many thanks,
      Bob G.

Dear List Readers:
Is it possible to save a RealAudio (or video) stream for later off-line
listening (or viewing)? I don't see an option to do so. It doesn't need to
be in the same format. Any sound format would be fine.
Thanks for reading.

Amadeus II is a powerful tool designed to manipulate, create
and analyze sounds. Its main features are:

    huge documents.
  - Long processes can be interrupted during their execution;
several processes can be launched at the same time.
  - Support of many compression formats (MACE, a-Law, mu-Law,...)
and sound qualities (16Bit, 24Bit, stereo...).
  - Real-time spectrum and oscilloscope; generation of sonograms.
  - Includes the "Amadeus Toolbox", which allows you to create
    your own external filters.

Subject: [*] Connect me to... freeware WWW Utlity for Macintosh

I must admit that the "Connect to..." script which comes with the MacOs is a
pretty good little utility by Apple Computer, Inc.
However, I have often been frustrated by not being able to change the
default URL that comes with it, and not being able to have a list of
favorite URL's which I can access from my desktop. That's why I put together
this little freeware application. It is meant as a replacement for the
"Connect to..." script, and I believe you will find it very versatile and
easy to use.

To start off, you must have:

A PowerPC computer
MacOS 8.5 or later
AppleScript
A web browser

If you would like to place this application in the Apple Menu, where it was
designed to go, simply double click on the "Installer applet". All the
moving will be done for you instead of you having to dive into multiple
folders. You can either delete the "Connect to..." script or use this
program in addition to the default script that comes with the OS.

Dhammapada--The Essential Dharma version 1.0

The Dhammapada is a collection of 423 Buddhist verses, arranged into 26
chapters by topic. It is said by many to contain the essence of the
Buddha's teachings, and is one of the best-loved works in the Pali Canon.

This application generates a verse of the Dhammapada each time it is
opened, making it a nice addition to the Startup Items folder. In
addition, the entire text of the Dhammapada is available for browsing and
reading in the conventional, linear way. Individual verses and chapters
can be saved as text files and printed from the File menu, and the Edit
menu allows copying of the text. If you encounter any unfamiliar terms,
there is a "Useful Definitions" item under the Apple menu.

This application is offered as a free gift of Dharma.

Subject: [*] Drop DownloadGURL, 2 AppleScript ftp clients

Drop Download
Uses OS 8.6's URL Access Scripting feature to download URLs and list directories.
Needs: Tanaka's OSAX 2.0x to read clipping files - available free from the author at:
Home page: <http://mtlab.ecn.fpu.ac.jp/tanaka_osax.html>
The OSAX: <http://mtlab.ecn.fpu.ac.jp/mySamples/Tanaka_osax_2.0b14.hqx>

Drag as many of the following kinds of URL containing files as you wish onto Drop
Download, and have them downloaded to a folder named "Downloads" on
your startup disk.

1. TEXT file types containing a URL or a return deliminated list of URLs.
2. Netscape URL files.
3. Clipping files (regular or internet) with a URL or a return deliminated list of URLs.
4. Anarchie bookmarks.
Or,
5. Double click Drop Download, and type or paste in a URL.

The URLs are saved into the "Comments" box of each file's "Get Info" window. Successful
downloads are logged to a text file at "HD:System Folder:Application Support:URL Access
Log Folder:URL Access Download Log" Error messages get saved to a text file on the desktop
named "Download failures"

Updated script no longer pops URL Access Scripting to the front for each file when doing
multiple file downloads, but rather uses a "silent mode" whenever it is doing multi - file
(more than 1) downloads.

Will try up to 5 times whenever it gets a server busy error (I Hope!! I think the error
is 12 but have been unable to test it!!).

Added a handler for input from Apple Data Detectors action files. Two un-compiled
scripts are included, and must be compiled after Drop Download is installed on your
machine. A small applet is also included to convert your compiled ADD action scripts
to the correct creator type. This extra step is necessary in order to avoid having to give
Drop Download a unique creator type.

DownloadGURL
Contains much of the code from Drop Download, but with "the on open" handler removed. I gave
DownloadGURL a custom creator code (zב) - That's: (z, ASCII 29, ASCII 202, ASCII 254).
Changing the creator code causes droplets to lose their 'dropletness' or their ability to process
files dropped onto them. But, by so doing, it can be specified as the default helper application
for ftp in the Internet preferences, and the ADD action scripts can come precompiled. If you want
to play around and edit this script, do it the easy way with Smile. Otherwise, you have to change
its creator type back and forth to edit it with Script Editor.

Greg's Browser 2.6.1 (January 10, 2000)
by Greg Landweber, coauthor of Kaleidoscope
Shareware Fee: $20

Winner of a MacUser Shareware Award for Best Utility, Greg's Browser
is a file management utility that lets you quickly and easily
navigate your way through the files on your hard disk, giving a
compact multi-pane view of your folder hierarchy. Greg's Browser was
originally based on the NeXT OS directory browser, and Apple's latest
demos show that the Mac OS X Finder will include a multiple folder
view similar to the Browser.

Version 2.6.1 is a maintenance release, with over a dozen minor
improvements and bug fixes. In particular, it fixes an erroneous
alert that appears when moving files to the trash and a beep when
emptying the trash.
It also fixes a crash when launching the browser if StuffIt
SpaceSaver is running. On the improvement side, the text
anti-aliasing code is completely rewritten, borrowing heavily from
SmoothType. Anti-aliased text now looks better, draws faster, and
requires less memory. You can also set the font size to anything from
9 to 16 point, since anti-aliased text often looks best at odd font
sizes. Finally, when browsing URL clippings, the Browser now displays
the URL at the bottom of the window.

HTML Optimizer 2.6.3

What it is: tool to check and optimize your web pages
Author: Ton Brand
Computer: Any Mac with HyperCard Player
Mac OS: 7.5 or later
License: shareware

Abstract:
HTML Optimizer saves often more than 10% of space on your web pages by
removing unnecessary characters and tags. Though this may seem a small
improvement, load time savings is much higher as your client's browser parses
the pages more efficient.
Three other useful functions of HTML Optimizer are:
(1) checking the so-called tagged pairs, i.e. the tags that always have to
appear together with their end tags, for example <TITLE>...</TITLE>;
(2) marking dangling tags. Further, IMG tags are checked for Width, Height
and Alt attributes;
(3) converting special characters between ASCII 128 and 255 to the &....;
notation.
Version 2.6.3 fixes a bug that could stall the program at a certain point.
Required to run HTML Optimizer is HyperCard Player 2.3 or later.

Subject: [*] Image Extractor Upload

Easy-to-use Tool Gives Access to Images Locked in EPS and PostScript Files:
GoodBuddy Software releases Image Extractor 3.0

Effingham, Illinois, USA -- 10 Jan 2000 -- GoodBuddy Software today announced the release of version 3.0 of Image Extractor, an easy-to-use tool empowering users to access images embedded in EPS and PostScript files.

What is Image Extractor?

Image Extractor pulls vector and raster images out of EPS and PostScript file, saving them to disk. The user may then edit the graphic(s) -- something they could not do before.

Desktop publishers and imaging service bureaus can use Image Extractor to save time when a customer has sent them an incorrect embedded image. Before Image Extractor, the customer had to be contacted to send a corrected or editable file. Image Extractor puts the file immediately on the operator's machine for editing.

Image Extractor is US$39 shareware. It is available from the GoodBuddy Software web site and all major Macintosh shareware ftp sites.

System Requirements: Any Apple Power Macintosh or other PPC computer running MacOS System 7.6.1 or later.

Features

* Accept any EPS or PostScript file as input.
* List all images contained within source files.
* Saves any selected image(s) to disk for full editing capability.

Availability

Image Extractor is available now, and may be downloaded through our Web site at <http://www.goodbuddy.net/budco/sware/preimex.htm>.

Subject: Hardware/Software Problem?

        I have a B&W G3 running OS 8.6.

Several months ago, I got tired of the small round mouse and bought
a Logitech 3-button mouse with a scroll wheel, a model M-BA47. It has been
working trouble free until this week.

Three days ago, I replaced the cramped keyboard that came with the
G3 with a full-sized Macally iKey board.

Yesterday my cursor froze and I had to a reboot using the reset
button on the CPU. I did it again and again and still the cursor remained
frozen in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

Having Conflict Catcher v8.0.6, I decided to do a conflict test.
Problem was, many times when I needed to click on the test bar indicating
that I still had a problem, the cursor was frozen and I could not do so and
was forced to restart using the reset button. I continued with the
conflict test with the results that CC8 identified Default Folder v3.0.3 as
the culprit and disabled it. The cursor did not freeze...for awhile.

Later in the day, it happened again. When the cursor froze during
this test, I decided to see if unplugging the mouse from the Macally
keyboard would unfreeze it. It did. I continued with the test, unplugging
and replugging the mouse each time it froze. This time, CC8 identified the
extensions Recordit Decoder and USB Iomega Jaz Adapter as the culprits.
However, when the test was done the cursor was frozen again. When I
unplugged it and plugged it back in, it worked fine. If things continue
like this, soon I'll have half my control panels and extensions disabled.

I am at a loss, but suspect a hardware vice software problem. As
the Macally iKey has mouse connections on the left and right hand side of
the keyboard, I now have it plugged into the left-hand side to see if I the
cursor freezes continue.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

        Bob G.

Does anybody know what is the highest version of Mac OS that will run on

What has to be done to enable software to see the drive?

Subject: SoundEdit 16??

What the heck ever happened to SoundEdit 16? My old copy only runs under
system 7, which I can still run on my old 7100 at home - that's how I've
been doing my digital audio these recent years - but increasingly I need to
be able to digitize audio from my PowerBook, which knows not of system 7.

I would upgrade to whatever it is that Macromedia is doing now that is the
descendant of SoundEdit 16...if I knew what it was. I don't even SEE ads
for such a product from Macromedia any more, though! Do I have to pay full
price for a competing product? What is out there that lets me select part
of an audio file, cut copy paste and/or delete the selected part? Fade in,
change various audio parameters (flange, equalizer, change pitch, change
duration, filter out noise, add echo, add resonance, etc etc etc)?

Open/Save/Save As options must include Mac soundfile ("System 7 sound"),
AIFF, Windows .WAV file, CD audio track; ideally ought to include MIDI and
MOD and .MP3 and other compressed formats and so on. Needs to be able to
digitize as much music as I have empty hard drive to use for supporting
scratch file, at 16 bits 44 / stereo and, preferably, more than two
channels per soundfile during editing with mix-down and save-down.
