Subject: (C) Clubmac splits up orders

Dear Digest readers,
My Powerbook power cord broke, and so I ordered a new one from ClubMac with
a battery. Now the battery is going to arrive earlier than the power
cord, and this is crazy. Usually one order goes out from other mail order
companies no matter how many parts are ordered. Clubmac separates orders,
so be forewarned. If you need a certain product earlier, don't buy from
Clubmac, or call in your order for the item you need sooner at an earlier
time. Don't expect them to arrive at the same time, even if you call them
in at the same time.

I have been able to order multiple items from MacZone, MacConnection, and
MacWarehouse before with this never happening. What's wrong with Clubmac?

Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

Subject: (Q) Sherlock search results in Finder Find

Dear Digest readers,
I don't know if this is a bug or feature. But somehow, everytime I search
a file locally on my hard drive now the results window is partially off
screen. Dragging the titlebar so I can see the whole window works, but
once I quit Sherlock, it reverts the results window location to the same
spot the next time I search. No matter how many times I try to relocate
the results window to a place entirely visible on my screen it reverts back
to its old location.

Powerbook G3 series 233Mhz 512k backside
MacOS 8.6
192MB of RAM
Virtual memory off

zapped the PRAM and rebuilt the desktop to no avail.

Anybody know how to make the default location of the search results window
different? I'd also like it to stretch full width of the screen on the
left hand side.

Maybe somebody could create a public domain software to do that?

Thank you.

Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

Hmm, first I've heard of this one...
You may have to completely delete the desktop files (DB and DF), and you've
got several options for accomplishing this. You can do it manually, by
using ResEdit or Norton DiskEditor to make the files visible or (easiest)
get TechTool from <http://www.micromat.com/> and use it to do a desktop
rebuild. It will automagically delete the desktop files and restart the box.
On restart the computer creates new desktop files. Try this and let us know...

Yes. The Palm Desktop software, version 2.1, available for free via
download from Palm's website. You don't even have to own a Palm Pilot to
take advantage of using the software on the Mac side. There are both PC
and Mac versions of the Desktop. I've never "shared" the calendar info
between Mac and PC, but there is an export feature in the Mac Palm
Desktop that may just do what you need.

Subject: [A] Desktop rebuilds (improperly) on each start up

You probably have a corupted Desktop File. You will need a program
capable of seeing invisible files such as Techtool, CanOpener or
ResEdit.

With Techtool you can do a true desktop rebuild, which deletes your old
DB files and forces the Mac to make new ones. Or you can do it yourself
with a program like ResEdit by making the desktop DB files visible and
then dragging them to the trash.

Another option, if you quake at the thought of poking around with
ResEdit, is to boot your Mac from a separate disk and force a desktop
rebuild by holding down the 'option + command' keys. The Mac will ask
you if you want to rebuild the separate disk then the internal disk.

Good luck

Subject: [A] G3 Powerbook S video out

Not having a PowerBook G3, I can only answer from the 'S' video
perspective. You will need an 'S' video enabled TV, an 'S' video cable
and some way of getting 'S' video out of your computer.

I have a small box from Focus which translates the Mac video signal to
'S' video. Here are some pitfalls I have had, just in case they help.

First of all just because your TV has an 'S' video plug doesn't mean it
is going to jump up and start displaying a signal from your computer. On
my model of RCA TV you must change the channel to 'AUX Video' which kind
of puts the TV in neutral before it will a accept input.

Second, atleast on my set up, you sometimes have to have are the
hardware duck in a row before you turn anything on (and sometimes not,
hmmmm...) But this technique may be worth a try.

Third, in my set up you control the output to the TV via the Monitors &
Sound control panel. On your particular modle PowerBook, you are going
to need to either 'mirror' or 'switch' your display to the TV. Meaning
you will either see your video display jump over to the TV or you will
see a mirror image on both.

Oh yeah, 'S' video doesn't support audio, so you will need an audio line
out to hear the sound on the TV.

Good luck

Most MIDI sequencing tools allow you to listen to your work live using
QuickTime Musical Instruments. I use Midigraphy, which is shareware and
available from Info-Mac. Have a look under MIDI->MIDI port setup if you
have Midigraphy, and select 'Use Quicktime'.

You can convert a standard MIDI file into a Quicktime file, which will
allow it to be played from the MoviePlayer in the following way: Load
MoviePlayer, and select Import... from the File menu. Open the MIDI file,
then choose a new name to save it under. There are some 'Options...' you
can set if you like. Quicktime 3.0 supports the General MIDI standard for
instrument patches (and possibly GS as well). Version 2.5 just supports a
subset of GM. So you need to select a GM or GS patches configuration in
your seqencer to ensure that the Quicktime patch sounds match the patch
names given in your sequencer.

I'm using Quicktime 2.5 here. It may be that in Quicktime 3.0, you need to
have paid for the Pro version before you can convert files like this. Or
you may get away with using the MoviePlayer from version 2.5 with the
Quicktime extensions from 3.0.

Hope this helps. Email me if you want any more help.

Ian.

Not a firsthand account, but you might ask around in
<news:comp.sys.mac.games.strategic>.
Lots of activity there, and lots of experience/knowledge(?) about
VPC/SoftWin emulation and consequent problems.
And you're right, emulation is probably your best strategy.

Go to your Monitors Resolution Control Strip (or the Monitors & Sound CP)
and you will notice new available settings for video display on the S-video
device, which will appear as another monitor. Not all resolutions listed
will look good, or even work, but some should. If it doesn't appear in the
list, reboot.

Howard, it seems to me that Macintosh Easy Open is to blame. Either
disable MEO or at least trash its preferences, and I'd bet your troubles
disappear.

BTW, are you the Howard Fried who used to author "Eye of the Examiner"?
