Minutes of the Integration of Internet Information Resources Working
Group (IIIR)

The ``Vision'' Document

A paragraph should be added to the ``Vision of an Integrated Internet
Information Service'' document (draft-ietf-iiir-vision) stating that the
vision is that of Peter Deutsch and Chris Weider, not of the group.
Chris will add this paragraph before the document expires. Chris will
also add concepts taken from Universal Network Interface To Everything
(UNITE) as suggested by Jill Foster.

Resource Transponders

The transponder document, ``Resource Transponders''
(draft-ietf-iiir-transponders), needs similar action. A paragraph needs
to be added stating that it is one vision, but not that of the entire
group. This document must be updated before expiring as well.

Z39.50 Over TCP/IP

Cliff Lynch discussed his Z39.50 over TCP document once again. There
was no disagreement from the group in submitting the paper as an RFC. He
will, however, post the most recent changes to the mailing list first.

WAIS and Z39.50

There were no comments on Margaret St. Pierre's document ``WAIS over
Z39.50-1988'' (draft-ietf-iiir-wais) and it will be submitted as an
Informational RFC. Brewster Kahle discussed a paper soon to come on the
WAIS profile based on Z39.50-1992.

Format Types Registry

Keith Moore discussed the types registry. RFC 1590 describes the
process for ``registering'' types. RFC 1590 gives details on how to
actually register. Requests to join the ietf-types@server.path.net list
should be sent to listserv@server.path.net. There is a security field
to indicate if there is or is not a security risk for the type name.

HTML/HTTP

Chris Weider discussed the current state of the HTML and HTTP documents.
The HTML document, ``Hypertext Markup Language (HTML): A Representation
of Textual Information and MetaInformation for Retrieval and
Interchange'' (draft-ietf-iiir-html), has been out for discussion. The
HTTP document, ``Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) A Stateless Search,
Retrieve and Manipulation Protocol'' (draft-ietf-iiir-http), has not
been submitted to the process yet. Tim Berners-Lee would like HTML and
HTTP to be Informational RFCs similar to the Gopher0 document.

Information Infrastructure

The issue of revising the charter was discussed. It was agreed that a
starting point for a charter could be the outcome of work being done by
Karen Sollins and Larry Manister on a requirements document for a global
information infrastructure. What common ground can be claimed (which
protocols can be shared)? UR*s are a valid, firm beginning. Jill
Foster suggested working more closely with librarians. Craig Summerhill
suggests working with he and CNI on determining a proper set of
participants.

Karen Sollins discussed some of the problems involved in defining the
components required for an information infrastructure, and explained
that the big picture, an integrated information infrastructure, is what
needs to be looked at. First cut at a list of services: service
location, security, caching/republication, URN!URL/URC, retrieval
(multiple protocols), retrieval ``engine'' (pass it a URL and it gives
you the object or a gateway location), gateways, definition server
(IANA) (might return the type information), update module
(transponders), payments/charging/accounting, coding/translation (GIF to
TIFF, etc.), presentation, and modification of services (added by Cliff
Newman).

Karen will develop these items into a draft for submission to the list
for discussion. Mitra suggests a functionality review of the items and
to narrow the scope. Chris Weider, Keith Moore, Mitra, Luc Boulianne,
Karen Sollins, and Larry Manister will be working on that. The European
Commission has asked the team to define a set of tasks for
infrastructure development. Erik Huizer will post the results of the
team to IIIR as a basis, which is somewhat parallel to Karens, in order
to avoid overlap. Most of the European Commission's 12 billion US
dollars will be put toward telephony infrastructure, with 50 million US
dollars toward advanced applications.

Gopher

The Gopher+ specification will be cleaned up at the next GopherCon and
will be submitted by Mark as an Informational RFC.
