Introduction

This was the first meeting of the IIIR Working Group. There are a
growing number of ``information services'' popping up on the Internet,
all of which have their own clients, servers, paradigms, etc. It is the
Chair's opinion, that it is time to start trying to tie them together to
provide a ``virtually unified'' information service to the end user.

Minutes

After a brief overview of the Charter, the Group heard from Tim, Peter,
and Jim, each of whom have experience in integrating various information
services together. Each of them was asked to speak for a bit on what
they had done to tie resources together, and then to share their views
on what needed to be done next. The Group then discussed the Charter.

Most people felt that it was not terribly useful for the Working Group
to get into the business of specifying gateway protocols, and that it
was too early to attempt some of the other milestones, such as common
exchange formats and query routing protocols. However, after an hour of
wrangling back and forth, agreement was reach, that it would be useful
at this time to start work on two documents, one to provide a vision of
the future for Internet information services in 1995, and the second to
build a taxonomy of currently available information service tools.

The first document would allow the Group to define a shared vision of
information services, to which the Group could start integration of
existing resources. The second document would allow us to determine
which conceptual tools we currently had to start building our future
vision, and determine which tools need to be developed to allow
integration of all the information resources.

These two papers will be assigned on the mailing list, so that everyone
who wishes to contribute may. The Charter will also be revised to
reflect these new goals, and will be published to the list by the end of
1992.

Comments on these Minutes may be posted to the mailing list for this
Group, iiir@merit.edu.
