Dear Sir,

In accordance with RFC 2026, Nortel Networks Limited has an issued patent
that is believed to pertain to at least a portion of the subject matter of
RFC 3428:

Title: Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Extension for Instant
Messaging

As understood, this RFC defines an IETF standards track protocol. Nortel
Networks U.S. Patent No. 6,757,732 B1, "Text-Based Communications over a
Data Network," may contain claims that are believed necessary for practicing
the resulting IETF Standard. This patent also has a pending foreign
equivalent published as WO 01/69883 A2 titled "Text-Based Communications
over a Data Network." In this regard, Nortel Networks will make available
licenses on fair, reasonable, reciprocal, and non-discriminatory terms to
such necessary claims it owns for the purposes of complying with this IETF
Standard.
